Russia attacks Ukraine: Kyiv area hit by Iranian-made kamikaze drones

Iranian-made kamikaze drones struck Ukraine’s capital region early Thursday as Russia continued its deadly assault across the country.

Kyiv regional governor Oleksiy Kuleba said the strike occurred in the area around the capital city, according to The Associated Press. It was unclear whether there were any casualties.

The intensity in the bombings was in retaliation for an attack on the Kerch Strait Bridge that connects Crimea to Russia, the BBC reported.

Kuleba issued an update via his official Telegram channel just after 6 a.m. local time, according to The Guardian.

“We have attacks on one of the communities of the region,” Kuleba wrote. “Previously -- an attack of kamikaze drones. Rescuers are already working.”

Earlier, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a U.S.-sponsored resolution condemning Russia’s illegal annexation of territory in Ukraine by a vote of 143-5, with 35 abstentions, The Washington Post reported.

In a statement, President Joe Biden applauded the 143 nations that “stood on the side of freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”

“By attacking the core tenets of the U.N. Charter, Russia is tearing at the very foundations of international peace and security,” he said.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was “grateful to 143 states that supported the historic UNGA (United Nations general assembly) resolution,” The Guardian reported.

“The world had its say -- (Russia’s) attempt at annexation is worthless and will never be recognized by free nations.”
