Trump responds after subpoena from Jan. 6 committee

Former President Donald Trump sent a memo to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol after the panel voted to subpoena him on Thursday, questioning why officials weren’t investigating election fraud.

The House committee voted unanimously to subpoena Trump for documents and testimony related to the violence at the Capitol. The former president did not say in the response shared Friday whether he would agree to testify.

In a memo dated Thursday, Trump reiterated claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him and protested the ongoing investigations and prosecutions of people believed to be involved in the January 2021 attack on the Capitol.

“This memo is being written to express our anger, disappointment, and complaint that with all of the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on what many consider to be a Charade and Witch Hunt, and despite strong and powerful requests, you have not spent even a short moment on examining the massive Election Fraud that took place during the 2020 Presidential Election, and have targeted only those who were, as concerned American Citizens, protesting the Fraud itself,” he wrote.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that mass fraud wrongfully tipped the 2020 presidential election to President Joe Biden; however, several courts have thrown out lawsuits alleging voter fraud. A review by The Associated Press in December found fewer than 475 cases of potential fraud across six battleground states.

At what was likely to be the last meeting of the Jan. 6 committee, the nine-member panel voted to subpoena Trump with Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney — who offered the resolution to subpoena the former president — saying that the group was “obligated to seek answers directly from the man who set this all in motion.”

“We have sufficient information to consider criminal referrals for multiple individuals and to recommend a range of legislative proposals to guard against another January 6,” she said. “But a key task remains: We must seek the testimony under oath of January 6′s central player.”

Trump has frequently criticized the committee as politically motivated. On Thursday, he called the group the “Unselect Committee of political Hacks & Thugs.”
