Who was Samuel Rende, the 90-year-old man shot and killed near a local cemetery?

PITTSBURGH — Samuel Rende, 90, was shot and killed while in a pickup truck near Calvary Cemetery in Greenfield over the weekend. Anthony Miller, 27, was arrested and charged with homicide and robbery in connection with the shooting, police said.

But who was Samuel Rende? Channel 11 talked with his business partner, Bill Spencer, who said he was “a great guy.”

S and B Club in Hazelwood is scheduled to open for New Year’s Eve. The "B" stands for Bill Spencer and the "S" stands for Sam Rende.

“He’s rough and tough, but really soft in the heart. He’s like. I’m just hurting,” Spencer said.

When Spencer got the call that Rende was killed, he was in disbelief.

“Sam’s dead, I said ‘No he’s not. I just saw him the night before.’ They started explaining it to me and I just flipped out. I just flipped out," Spencer said.

According to the criminal complaint, an eyewitness spotted the suspect walking away from the scene with a dog. Police said he was carrying a gun, and officers found a bloody ring hiding in Miller’s sock, which he admitted belonged to Rende.

Police said Miller also confessed to the shooting.

Despite the pain, Spencer said he still plans on opening the social club on Second Avenue that bears Rende’s name. Spencer said it will be in honor of his mentor.

“The only other people to have that much confidence in me was my mother and father, and they’ve been gone a long time," Spencer said.

Despite calling the shooting targeted, Pittsburgh police have not released a possible motive.

Miller’s next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
