WV Lawmakers vote to mandate cursive handwriting lessons in schools

BLUEFIELD, W.V. — In these days of electronic communication, many worry kids aren’t learning how to sign their name properly.

Some lawmakers in West Virginia want to see a return to basics, at least so far as handwriting is concerned.

The House of Delegates passed a bill Tuesday requiring schools to implement a cursive writing requirement into their curriculum.

According to Del. Joe Ellington, the mandate was already in place for grades two to four, but now they are expanding it to fifth grade.

“We have adults coming out of the school system that can’t write cursive. Most of our founding documents are in cursive. They can’t read that unless it’s in print,” Del. Ellington told WVVA.

The bill passed 87 to eight and now moves to the Senate for consideration.
