What to know about parking, road closures ahead of Pirates Opening Day

Sugar Bird Thursday saw the opening of the Sugar Bird takeout spot and the new big screen across from PNC Park.

PITTSBURGH — The annual tradition of Pittsburgh Pirates Opening Day has a new wrinkle beyond the usual traffic, with the preparations for this month’s NFL Draft closing a few streets between PNC Park and Acrisure Stadium.

The Pirates said Thursday that there should be minimal disruption from the NFL Draft preparations on the Pirates’ opening weekend. But they and VisitPittsburgh noted several road and parking lot closures on Friday due to the draft. Art Rooney Way and West General Robinson Street from Art Rooney Way to Chuck Noll Drive are closed to traffic. So too are a few parking lots, including Gold 1A, the Stage AE lot and several of the smaller Red lots.

“While this represents a limited impact on parking, fans should plan accordingly,” the Pirates and VisitPittsburgh said in a statement Thursday.

The home opener, which will be the first game as a Pirate for phenom Konnor Griffin, will see the 3-3 Pirates host the Baltimore Orioles in a game that starts at 4:12 p.m. But like previous opening days, there will be festivities all around the ballpark, and the opening of the new outside area with a big-screen TV and the Sugar Bird chicken/donut takeout joint across from the Honus Wagner statue. Those both opened Thursday, and had drawn a crowd eager to try them out.
