Connor Dewar’s harmless backhand sweep toward the net was ticketed for Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger’s chest, and yet another whistle in the subdued, defensive struggle was forthcoming. But that’s when the game changed as Dewar’s backhand ramped off Dallas defenseman Liam Bichsel’s stick over a waiting Oettinger and just under the crossbar for the first goal of the game.
It took until 1:57 in the third period for either team to light the lamp, and it was the Penguins’ first lead in more than three full games. And they almost continued the tight play through the end, but Tyler Seguin deflected Jason Robertson’s shot with 29 seconds remaining, and for the second time in two nights, the Penguins needed a shootout.
It took an extra round, but the Penguins (3-2-1) scored three goals in the shootout to beat Dallas (2-2-1) 2-1 Saturday at PPG Paints Arena.
