Subsidiary of Post-Gazette ownership purchases Pittsburgh City Paper

PITTSBURGH — On Wednesday, Toledo, Ohio-based Block Communications Inc., which owns and publishes the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, announced that one of its wholly-owned subsidiaries has purchased another local publication.

Cars Holding Inc., a Block Communications subsidiary, has purchased the Pittsburgh City Paper from Eagle Media, the owner of the Butler Eagle. Eagle Media has owned the Pittsburgh City Paper, including its weekly print publication and digital website, since 2016.

“We are pleased to announce that we have found an excellent successor to continue the Pittsburgh City Paper,” Ron Vodenichar, president and publisher of the Butler Eagle, said in a news release. “We have learned over time that the City Paper wasn’t a good fit for our business and trying to manage a Pittsburgh publication from a distance just wasn’t working. Cars Holding Inc. stepped up with their offer at the right time and saved the publication from a potential closing and saved the jobs of the employees. We wish the employees well and hope the publication, under strong ownership, experiences many more years of serving the city of Pittsburgh.”
