PITTSBURGH — Not only is UPMC the largest employer in the Pittsburgh region, with more than 50,000 workers in southwestern Pennsylvania, it also is the largest nongovernmental employer in the state.
UPMC has about 91,000 global employees, including some in New York and Maryland, as well as its international operations, which include China, Ireland, Italy and Kazakhstan.

Highmark No. 2: Highmark Health ranks second among employers in the Pittsburgh region, with almost 24,000 local employees, out of 35,000 total.
Pitt No. 3: The University of Pittsburgh is the region's third-largest nongovernmental employer. It has 13,643 workers in southwest Pennsylvania and about 14,500 overall.
