Sledding, cleanup, shoveling underway after morning snow storm blankets the region

PITTSBURGH — The cleanup and the shoveling are well underway after a morning-rush snow storm blanketed the region with up to 5 inches of powder.

The morning commute was a mess in many places as the snow fell fast and heavy. WPXI’s Traffic Anchor Trisha Pittman counted upwards of 30 crashes as people tried to make their way into the city for work.

With dozens of area schools cancelling classes on Friday, many families took to the nearby parks and hills to get in some sled riding. Plus, with many local schools now utilizing flexible instruction days, students did not have to make up missed work.

“This is the most significant snow we’ve had. I’m off today so I get to sledride with my grandson so I’m just handing out and having a good time with him. I hope it snows more. I was really hoping we’d get one big blast so at least we got that,” smiled Jim Wollett.

Others, like Kathy Miller and her daughters, were helping out family and friend with shoveling the sidewalks and driveways.

“I was praying for a snow day. This has been the best snow day ever with my girls!” said Miller.
