Convicted felon charged in fatal Marshall-Shadeland shooting

PITTSBURGH — A man has been charged in connection with a shooting Saturday morning in Pittsburgh’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood that left one man dead and a woman wounded.

The shooting was reported about 9:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Woodland Avenue.

Abdul Rasheed, 34, of Rochester, New York, is charged with criminal homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, two counts of robbery and carrying a firearm without a license.

A criminal complaint states that Rasheed is a convicted felon who is not permitted to carry a firearm.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said a man was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Thomas Watt, 28, of Marshall-Shadeland.

A 29-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was last listed in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

According to a criminal complaint, the woman said she sand Watt were walking on Woodland Avenue when Rasheed walked up to them and said, "Give me all of your money," as he pointed a black revolver at them.

The woman told police that Rasheed shot her in the leg while Watt reached into his pocket for his money. According to the complaint, the woman started to run away, and Watt got in between her and Rasheed. The woman said she heard two more gunshots and turned to see Watt lying on the ground. The woman told police that Rasheed ran back to the car, got in the passenger seat and the car sped away.

A short time later, a Channel 11 News camera captured police searching a white car about two miles away on Venture Street. Police said the vehicle was stopped and Rasheed was taken into custody.

The complaint states that the woman identified Rasheed as the suspect from a police photo array.

Rasheed is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 4.  He remains in the Allegheny County Jail without bond.
