PITTSBURGH — Two people are facing charges after police say they attacked a worker at a Pittsburgh gas station Thursday.
Court records obtained by Channel 11 show police were called to the Sunoco along Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield around 11:30 a.m. for a reported theft.
Nearby, police found two people who matched the suspects’ descriptions. They’re identified as Duron Davenport, 19, and Cedrick Smith, 25, both of Pittsburgh.
The two claimed that a worker at the Sunoco had assaulted them.
According to the court records, Davenport told police he’d entered the store and demanded to be sold cigars. The clerk wouldn’t do it and allegedly smacked them after they argued. Davenport then said the clerk “got what he deserved.”
Police note that Davenport is not old enough to buy cigars.
Smith told police that the clerk “needs to go back to his land ... his country ... keep all that disrespect over there,” and “With the guy there ... at the store, it has to do with race,” records say.
Officers met with the clerk, who had a gash above his eye.
The clerk claimed that he’d told Davenport and Smith to leave the store, after which they argued, and he was attacked.
Surveillance video of the incident reportedly showed the clerk swing at Davenport but not make contact. He then goes around the counter before Smith and Davenport begin punching him.
Online court records show Davenport and Smith are charged with simple assault and ethnic intimidation. Their preliminary hearings are scheduled for Sept. 23.
