ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Allegheny County officials announced that applications are open for a program designed to help communities increase walking and biking opportunities.
On Monday, Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato and Allegheny County Economic Development announced the opening of applications for the 2026 Active Allegheny Grant Program.
The program makes $150,000 available to local communities, with individual grant awards of up to $50,000 to plan and design safer walking and biking routes.
“Everyone deserves to live in a community where it’s safe and easy to get around, whether you’re walking to school, biking to work, catching a bus, or heading to a local business,” Innamorato said. “Active Allegheny is about investing in the everyday connections that make our communities better places to live and helping municipalities turn those ideas into real improvements for their residents.”
The funding supports local projects that create safer pedestrian and bicycle connections to schools, public transit hubs and business districts.
Eligible work includes initial planning studies, such as wayfinding systems and bicycle routes, as well as engineering and design work to move existing plans closer to construction.
Applications are open to Allegheny County municipalities, councils of governments applying on behalf of member communities and nonprofit organizations applying on behalf of a municipality.
Multi-municipal applications are encouraged, though only one application will be considered per municipality.
While standard grant requests are capped at $50,000, higher amounts may be considered for projects that significantly increase physical activity, link to major transportation systems or involve multiple municipalities.
Administering organizations may include an administrative fee of up to 5%.
The program launched in 2016 as a public health initiative led by the Allegheny County Health Department, funded by the Richard King Mellon Foundation with support from the Hillman Foundation.
Applications must be submitted online through the county economic development portal by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, 2026.
