Dozens displaced after fire at Brentwood apartment building

PITTSBURGH — Crews rushed to a fire at an apartment building in Brentwood around 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Fire crews said the flames and smoke had spread throughout the building by the time they arrived. About 60 people were living there at the time.

Multiple people were trapped inside their apartments, including young children and an infant. Luckily, everyone was able to get out safely and there were no deaths.

Officers from Brentwood Police, Baldwin Borough Police, Whitehall Police, and Jefferson Hills Police were able to evacuate people quickly. The Mt. Oliver Volunteer Fire Department was able to rescue multiple people trapped on the top floor of the building.

It’s not clear what sparked the fire or how many people were displaced. People at the scene told Channel 11 there was a lot of smoke on the first floor of the building. A witness said one person was pulled to safety from an upper level of the building. Another person said they looked outside and saw the flames.

Fire officials at the scene said about eight people, including three firemen were taken to various hospitals for treatment.

Multiple fire companies rushed to the building including crews from Baldwin, Pleasant Hills, Whitehall and Brentwood.

The Red Cross is helping the families impacted with clothes, shelter and food.
