NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. — The Beaver County District Attorney plans to have a local restaurant and bar shut down after a drug raid was performed by law enforcement last Friday.
Video posted on Facebook Friday showed police outside of Fifth Avenue Taphouse in New Brighton. In an exclusive interview with Channel 11, District Attorney Nate Bible said it was part of a drug investigation started by the state Attorney General’s Office.
“It’s pretty obvious that, to us at least, the drugs were being sold out of that restaurant,” Bible told Channel 11’s Andrew Havranek.
Bible said the investigation had been going on for months with the AG’s office, State Police, Beaver County Drug Task Force, New Brighton Police, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Channel 11 saw state police troopers speaking with employees outside the restaurant and home Tuesday afternoon.
“We believe this to be a pretty large-scale operation,” Bible said. “We know that there are other individuals involved, not just the one individual that we’ve been focusing on. We know that there are multiple players here, and there’s going to be several arrests that come from this.”
During the raid on the restaurant and a house linked to the restaurant, police seized cocaine and a large amount of cash between the two buildings.
“It’s absolutely someone that’s very heavily involved with the restaurant,” Bible said.
One person who spoke with Channel 11 didn’t want to be on camera but was stunned by the news.
“I’m really shocked. Really surprised,” she said. “I’ve known those people, and we enjoyed going in there for dinner, breakfast; everything was wonderful; I had no idea.”
Bible said his office and the Liquor Control Board will be filing paperwork to have Fifth Avenue Taphouse shut down.
“We couldn’t necessarily have prevented this from happening, but we can certainly rectify it after the fact and make sure that this business does not continue to operate,” Bible said.
“Do you think it needs to be shut down?” Havranek asked Stanley Schooley of Beaver Falls.
“Yes. Yes. Whoever owns it? Yes. He deserves that,” he said.
Channel 11’s Andrew Havranek stopped at the Taphouse Tuesday and asked an employee if the owner would come out to talk, but no one did.
We also called the restaurant and haven’t heard back.
While charges have not yet been filed, Bible said they will be soon.
