CITY OF WASHINGTON, Pa. — A busy stretch of Beau Street in the City of Washington will close Monday for at least a month as crews work to finish demolishing the former Courthouse Square building.
City leaders say the closure could last into June, though they hope to complete the work much sooner.
The project was temporarily halted last month after a construction accident. A large excavator toppled over with the operator inside. He was not injured.
Crews are now preparing to resume work. On Saturday, Washington Police plan a temporary “preview” closure to move heavy equipment into the area ahead of Monday’s full shutdown.
The closure is expected to impact people who visit the Crossroads Center building across the street, which sees a steady flow of people throughout the day. Several people Channel 11 spoke with said they were unaware of the upcoming closure.
“I think it will be hard for the city — it’ll be inconvenient,” Sherry Stemple said.
City officials say anyone needing access to offices in the Crossroads Center should plan to park in the garage next to it and walk.
