Cleanup efforts are progressing at Oakmont Carnegie Library after flood

OAKMONT, Pa. — Cleanup efforts are progressing at the Oakmont Carnegie Library after it was flooded during heavy downpours.

Dozens of volunteers gathered at the library on Tuesday to continue their cleanup efforts.

The flood impacted the library’s lower level.

Around 30 people helped move books and throw out toys so crews could begin cutting out parts of damaged walls.

The main level of the library reopened on Monday.

Resident and volunteer Bobbi Hons said it is about giving back to the library, which gives so much to the community.

“So many lovely programs come into this library. Children, all the time with their programs. Community outreach is so wonderful here, and we want to continue that,” Hons said.

Library director Caitlyn Boland recognized a sense of community in the cleanup and repair efforts.

“Everything that we do here is to help people, and we really try and make everybody feel like they’re welcome here. We think that is so important, and we value communities so much,” Boland said.

Currently, the library’s “makerspace,” which is located downstairs where the flood happened, is closed, but a miniature version has been established upstairs to ensure creatives have access to some of the artistic tools.
