Deer Lakes family honors son who died by suicide during disc golf fundraiser

The family of a Deer Lakes man held a disc golf outing on Sunday to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

The event was held in memory of Jack Scherer, who died by suicide in 2020.

His family said that, as the youngest of four, he loved sports, including disc golf. They offered some advice to anyone who may be struggling with their mental health.

“Reach out. Don’t give up. Keep talking,” Ben and Christine Scherer said. “Stay close to people. He was too far away. He was in Texas. You got to keep them close.

The outing raises money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and a scholarship in his name that supports math and chemistry students at Deer Lakes High School.
