WVU Medicine on Monday afternoon welcomed the former Independence Health System into its multistate fold with a series of 11 employee picnics held at its hospitals, outpatient centers and health squares.
The event in Greensburg, held under a bright and blue fall sky, featured the West Virginia University marching band, the Mountaineer mascot and top officials with WVU Health System and the local health system including WVU Medicine CEO Albert Wright Jr., WVU Hospitals President and CEO Michael Grace, former Independence Health System CEO and WVU Medicine advisor Ken DeFurio and Westmoreland, Latrobe and Frick Hospitals CEO Brian Fritz.
The affiliation, announced last November, took effect Oct. 1 and comes with it a pledge of $800 million in capital investment into the hospital system that also includes Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler and Clarion Hospital in Clarion. It comes a little over three years following the 2023 merger of Butler Health System and Excela Health into Independence Health System.
