HOMESTEAD, Pa. — Drivers navigated traffic on the Homestead Grays bridge throughout the day Thursday after workers closed several lanes hours earlier than announced.
The two southbound lanes – heading toward Homestead – were roped off until minutes before rush hour began. One lane of travel stayed open in each direction with backups forming on the city-bound side.
Allegheny County previously announced the bridge would be reduced to two lanes from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday as repair work was completed.
The 90-year-old bridge, which carries 40,000 cars each day, is rated in fair condition.
“Looking like it’s going to take us forever to get home,” Kaylynne Keyrouze said as she loaded groceries into her car in The Waterfront Thursday. “We’ll see how that goes.”
Crossing the bridge normally takes 40 seconds. It took WPXI 10 minutes to cross Thursday, outside of rush hour and Kennywood’s Phantom Fall Fest traffic.
Workers reopened the bridge for rush hour Thursday but planned to resume work around 7 p.m. instead of nine.
Closures will continue on weekends until mid-November.
PRT said none of its bus routes over the bridge will change or be disrupted.
