Man dead after crashing car, fleeing from police in Pittsburgh’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood

PITTSBURGH — A man is dead after police said he crashed his car and then fled from police before crashing three more times in Pittsburgh’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood.

According to Pittsburgh police, officers were dispatched to Eckert Street and Beaver Avenue for a car crash just before 6:40 a.m.

Officers on the scene saw a car pinned against a wall and approached the male driver, who appeared unresponsive.

Police said the driver, later identified as 26-year-old Tiere Maddox, came to and spoke with the officers through the window.

During this exchange, the responding officers saw a large quantity of narcotics on Maddox’s lap and asked him to step out of the vehicle.

According to police, Maddox rolled his window up and fled, hitting an unoccupied patrol car head-on and traveling southbound on Beaver Avenue at a high rate of speed.

Police said the car then hit a light standard on Island Avenue before crashing into a wall and catching fire.

The fire was put out and Maddox was extricated from the car. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.

The Collision Investigation Unit is investigating.
