Officials say Jamar Thomas was shot as many as five times outside an apartment building on Collins Avenue.
“Your child is not supposed to die before you,” Thomas’ mother, Teresea Pritchett, said.
When the officer arrived, he saw a man at the scene with his hands over his head, surrendering.
Brett Terry, 19, was taken into police custody. Police paperwork obtained by Channel 11 News indicates Thomas and Terry had some type of argument before the shots were fired.
According to Pritchett, she said she knew Terry like a son.
“I love that boy. I let him in my house, and he killed my boy,” she said.
Pritchett’s 14-year-old son was grazed in the stomach by a bullet. That juvenile is one of two primary witnesses in the case.
Pittsburgh police have charged Terry with homicide. According to the criminal complaint, the suspect told police he was sorry, and he didn’t want to shoot him.
Terry’s brother told Channel 11 News that Terry was having mental issues, and he wasn’t himself.
