Man killed, woman injured in Washington County robbery attempt; Teen arrested

WASHINGTON, Pa. — A man was killed and a woman ran for help after being shot during a robbery attempt in Washington County Tuesday night, investigators said.

Investigators said 18-year-old Brandon Wolowski killed 37-year-old Matthew Mathias while attempting to steal guns from Mathias' Fayette Street home.

Police said a woman inside of the home at the time was also shot, but ran to a neighbor's home for help.

"I thought my front end on my truck was acting up. I pulled in the driveway and opened the door and a woman came up beside my truck and said she had been shot," said neighbor Bo Fleming. “I told her to hurry up and get inside my house as soon as she came aside my truck because I didn’t know if the shooter was still around. We got inside the house, locked the door and called 911.”

Investigators told Channel 11’s Dave Bondy that Wolowski was caught by police a few streets away.

According to the criminal complaint, Wolowski said his goal was to steal guns from a safe inside the home.

Officials said the woman, whose name has not been released, was shot twice and was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital where she's expected to survive.

“We were just here right before it happened, me and my daughter,” the woman’s cousin, Amy Kennedy, said.

Kennedy said Mathias was partially deaf and loved to work on cars. Neighbors told Bondy he also loved his gun collection.
