Penn-Trafford parents push back on school closure proposals; hearing decision tabled

PENN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — More than 50 parents pleaded with Penn-Trafford School Board members Monday to consider alternatives to closing a school as the district weighs three reconfiguration proposals.

The decision on whether to schedule a future public hearing was tabled indefinitely, according to a school board member.

Two previous proposals would close McCullough Elementary School and change which grades are taught at several other schools in the district.

The district previously said the possible changes would save more than $1 million.

Ahead of Monday’s special meeting, the board introduced a third proposal under which Level Green Elementary would be the only school to close.

Parents raised concerns about longer bus rides and disruptions to their children’s routines.

“Our kids need stability. Not change,” one speaker told the board.

Allison Florio, who has children in elementary and high school, said the proposed changes could significantly increase her daughter’s time on the bus.

“Under these proposed plans, our transportation times for my daughter at least will go from about 20 minutes a day to an estimated hour and 40 minutes a day on the bus,” Florio said.

She urged the board to consider how it could use district resources while limiting transportation times.

“I think that we need to logistically look at how we can use our resources as well but focus on cutting those transportation times down for our students,” Florio said.

Other parents also asked the board to explore more alternatives that would keep schools open.
