Man shot, killed in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood identified; suspect flees on foot

PITTSBURGH — A man was shot and killed around 7:00 a.m. Friday in the city’s Knoxville neighborhood, according to Pittsburgh police.

It happened along McKinley Street.

That’s where neighbors saw the man’s body laying in the street. Investigators say he was hit with multiple bullets.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 31-year-old Alec Gary Wilbur.

“My heart was going like this,” Clarence Adkins said, motioning quickly with his hands. “It was beating [fast]. It’s scary.”

Adkins lives across the street from where the shooting happened.

He said he ran outside when he heard around a dozen shots fired.

Police say the suspected gunman took off down an alley. Adkins saw him walk away.

“All I see was a young guy, about my height, with all black on and a mask on,” Adkins said. “He went down and came back up. He went that way.”

“It’s just crazy times we live in,” said Donald Michaels, who lives a few blocks away. “It’s just crazy. It’s scary.”

Michaels said he frequently hears gunshots in this neighborhood and is worried for his safety.

“I’m just trying to survive ‘til I retire,” said Michaels.

He wants the city and its residents to be more accountable.

“They’ve got to crack down,” said Michaels. “They’ve got to get the community involved in religion and stuff. People have got to start praying.”

So far, police have not announced a suspect’s name and the identity of the man killed has not been released. If you know anything that can help investigators, you’re asked to contact Pittsburgh police.
