Mayor Ed Gainey presents his first budget to city council, says police budget will increase

PITTSBURGH — Mayor Ed Gainey presented his first budget to the city council today.

The mayor touted investments in public safety, including the first class of police recruits in years.

Target 11 investigator Rick Earle has been covering staffing challenges within the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

The police academy class was put on hold during the pandemic.

Now, the previous administration said they put money in the budget this year for a new class, but that never happened.

The new mayor says it will happen next year, not once, but twice.
