DELMONT, Pa. — Drivers on Route 22 in Delmont may find themselves stuck on Wednesday while the mega load trucks heading from the Armstrong Terminal to Homer City make their way along the busy highway in the middle of the afternoon.
“Everyone’s got to be somewhere at the end of the day. It’s going to be gridlocked already anyway. They should do that in the middle of the night when there is no traffic on the roadway. That’s crazy,” driver Danny Grad from Delmont said.
Drivers in Delmont are preparing for the mega load trucks to move through the area.
“It’s just common sense. You have to have patience. If you don’t have patience, you might as well find another detour to go around,” driver Rodney Armstrong said.
Starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, the mega loads will take off from the Armstrong terminal. Edwards Moving and Rigging says they will move through areas like Leechburg, Hyde Park, Vandergrift, and Apollo during the morning, putting them on Route 66 and US 22 in the afternoon.
“That’s going to keep a lot of people backed up because that’s rush hour for them,” driver Jones Martin said.
The trucks will park just before Blairsville until they start to travel across the Conemaugh River from 7 p.m. to midnight. The bridge will be closed eastbound during that time. The rest of the drive to Homer City will take place on Thursday morning.
PennDOT says state police will travel in front of the trucks to look for potential hazards, and travel behind the trucks to report any damage they cause. No cars will be allowed to go around the trucks, which will be driving at a max speed of 15 miles per hour.
