New food bank opens on Mt. Washington

PITTSBURGH — A food bank in Mount Washington is now up and running in a new location.

Washington Heights Ecumenical Food Bank celebrated its grand opening on Boggs Avenue on Thursday.

Volunteers have spent the past few weeks moving everything and getting set up.

The food bank is set up like a market, and officials say it’s much needed in the community.

“Neighbors can come in and shop for what they need, with dignity in Allegheny County in Pittsburgh and specifically Mount Washington. We believe that access to fresh nutritious food is a human right,” Mount Washington Community Development Corporation President David Binkoski said.

The food bank is also planning a distribution event next Tuesday.
