OAKMONT, Pa. — The Oakmont Carnegie Library is temporarily closed through Friday, following the discovery of bed bugs in a limited area of the facility.
Library administration announced that the entire building is undergoing professional treatment before welcoming patrons back.
The closure took effect Thursday, after the pests were identified inside the building. Oakmont Carnegie Library administration issued a statement outlining the precautionary measures being taken.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we will have the entire building professionally treated before reopening,” library administration said, adding that patron and staff safety remains the primary priority.
Library officials stated that the main collection currently shows no signs of pest activity. However, administration recommended that patrons who currently have borrowed items at home perform a visual check.
“The library collection does not appear to be affected. But as a precaution, patrons with library materials currently at home may wish to check the covers, bindings and creases of books for any unusual signs,” library administration said.
If patrons discover anything concerning on their checked-out materials, officials instructed them to isolate the items immediately.
“If you notice anything that concerns you, please place the item in a sealed plastic bag and contact the library for guidance before returning it,” library administration said. Patrons can contact staff for assistance by emailing oakmont@oakmontlibrary.org.
For general information on identifying bed bugs, the library directed the public to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website. Regular inspections will also continue once normal operations resume.
“Following treatment, we will continue to professionally monitor the building on a regular basis to help identify and address any further concerns,” library administration stated.
The Oakmont Carnegie Library is scheduled to reopen to the public on Saturday, following the completion of the facility-wide treatment.
