CRANBERRY, Pa. — Franklin Road between Cranberry Commons Drive and Mars Road is closed until Sept. 3. It’s the third phase of a $19 million project.
“When the roadways were originally installed, they weren’t designed to handle the amount of traffic, the amount of turning in and out of businesses, in and out of side roads, all of that type of stuff,” said Christina Gibbs of PennDOT District 10.
The project started back in 2024.
“So essentially, utility work was really the first two years in terms of relocating all the lines necessary overhead and anything that may have been underground,” Gibbs said.
Now, the work on a section of the road is underway.
Crews are putting in a new drainage system, rumble strips, widening the shoulders and adding turning lanes.
PennDOT said it will make the Franklin Road Corridor safer for drivers going to and from shopping plazas on Route 228 and North Catholic High School.
“What we’re really focusing on is widening the shoulders, which increases the visibility, increases the ability for motorists to have more room to maneuver if needed,” Gibbs said. “And then, the turn lanes also are a benefit to allow people a safer access to make lefts, rights off of the main drag of Franklin Road.”
This is not the only project happening on Franklin Road.
Meijer, a new grocery store, is going to be a part of the new Henderson Crossing development right on the land off of 228 and Franklin Road near North Catholic High School.
While this work isn’t part of that development, PennDOT is aware of that project.
“We need to be aware when these things come in so that if anything needs to be done in terms of the roadways, state accesses, that type of stuff, that we can adjust or oversee as needed,” Gibbs said.
This work on Franklin Road will continue north up to Peters Road until mid-November of 2027.
