Allegheny County dispatchers said police officers, firefighters and medics were called to the intersection of Fifth Avenue and South Neville Street at 6:56 p.m.

A spokesperson from PRT said the person was hit while the 58-Greenfield bus was turning left from Neville Street and onto Fifth Avenue.

PRT said the victim, a woman in her late 20s, was taken to a UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. She is in critical but stable condition.

Witnesses told Channel 11 they stepped outside their Carnegie Mellon University dorm and were met with chaos.

“We saw a bunch of cops come and fire trucks and everything and we just ran out,” said Abdul Brooks, a CMU freshman.

He described seeing the woman trapped beneath the bus.

“We saw the bus and we saw someone under the bus and their hands were moving all around,” the student said.

Witnesses say the driver appeared distraught after the crash.

“We saw the bus driver actually come out of the bus and she was crying,” one student said.

When Channel 11 arrived on scene, several personal belongings could be seen under the bus.

Students said first responders used wooden planks to lift the bus and free the victim before placing her on a stretcher.

Police shut down the intersection for nearly two hours while investigators worked the scene.

Nearby students say they are still shaken.

“Pretty tragic situation. Honestly, I don’t even know how to respond to this,” said Luca Molinari, a CMU student. “I’ve never seen anything like this before in person.”

A PRT spokesperson said they were initially told that she would be undergoing surgery.

“That is apparently no longer the case, at least not at the moment,” the spokesperson said.

The woman remains in critical but stable condition at UPMC Presbyterian.
