Pittsburgh police investigating 2nd downtown jewelry heist

PITTSBURGH — A jewelry heist like that out of a Hollywood film is under investigation in downtown Pittsburgh. It’s the second jewelry theft in the area in less than a week, Pittsburgh police said.

The owner of Yuriy’s Jewelry told Channel 11 News that someone broke into his store Sunday but not through the front door. Surveillance video shows the thieves cutting their way inside through the store’s wall.

A manager at Yuriy’s Jewelry said the thieves broke through the sidewalk cellar doors at the vacant Smithfield Café and then went through the basement to drill through a brick wall right next door into the jewelry store.

After first missing their mark, the thieves found a safe containing watches, gold jewelry and diamonds, the manager said.

Police said the contents were worth much more than the $130,000 worth of diamond earrings stolen last week from Garcia Jewelers on Liberty Avenue. Two men caught on camera in that heist are still being sought.

Authorities said they don’t believe the two jewelry thefts are connected, but it’s something they continue to investigate.
