Pittsburgh Regional Transit preparing for incoming winter weather

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Regional Transit is preparing for the holiday storm heading our way and making some adjustments.

The expected winter forecast of wet snow and freezing rain can potentially cause a lot of issues for the T on Friday, which could impact this rider who relies on it to get to and from work.

“And I’ll either make it to work or I won’t make it to work so I’ll just work from home,” said rider Amita Patl.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit officials said they are putting sleet cutters on the rail cars. It will shave the ice off the wires which will allow the cars to get electricity.

If needed, they will also use the sleet cutters overnight to prevent ice from building up.

Some riders said they plan to be extra patient and will give themselves extra time on Friday in case there are delays.

“Whether it’s a bus, planes, even your own car, you have to adjust with the detours and those things,” said rider Eddie Masangcay.

As for the buses, Pittsburgh Regional Transit said buses will operate in most weather events, depending on the condition of the roads.

Buses will stay on the main roads if smaller streets are impassible or too steep and slippery.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit will be closely monitoring the storm and plans to post updates on Twitter at @pghtransitalert and its website.
