Police investigating fatal shooting on Pittsburgh’s North Side

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police are actively looking for the person who shot and killed a man just steps away from the National Aviary on Thursday evening.

“It’s really disgusting to see it right around our neighborhood,” Nathaniel Knochel, who lives in the Northside, told Channel 11.

The medical examiner identified Shayne Strader as the man who was shot and killed right outside on Arch Street.

He was shot multiple times in his head and back.

“You know that you’re blessed it’s not you, but you have to have the humanity to recognize it is somebody and pray for them. It could (be) you, it could be anybody you know,” Knochel said.

The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. Thursday evening, when people were still out and about in the community.

When our cameras were there, we saw police officers and evidence markers all over the street.

“The city is beautiful, but what goes on in the slums of it … one side of the street is nice and the other side is dark. Everything is divided,” Northside resident Deonte Kidd said.

Police have yet to make an arrest in last night’s case, and no one has been charged in the deadly Airbnb shooting that happened just a mile away.

I asked Pittsburgh police if they were going to increase patrols in the Northside after last night’s shooting, and a spokesperson told me, “All zone 1 officers will remain vigilant while patrolling all of their area.”

“I just wish everything was peaceful. I prefer peace over war any day,” Kidd added.
