Police: Westmoreland County man shoots wife with flare gun

SUTERSVILLE, Pa.,None — A Westmoreland County man was arrested Wednesday accused of shooting a flare gun twice at his wife of 18 years, striking her in the torso with the second shot.

According to police, Michael Carney, 52, of Sutersville shot his wife Ruth Carney at their First Avenue home.

“Fortunately the flare just grazed the side of her face. Then he reloaded the gun, because it’s only a single-shot, and he shot her again in the abdomen,” Pennsylvania State Trooper Steven Limani said. “She fell to the ground and he jumped on top of her. He then started to strike her.”

Police say Ruth Carney was treated for "serious but not life-threatening injuries" at a hospital and then released.

Michael Carney is facing charges of aggravated assault.
