PITTSBURGH — This article originally appeared on PGHBaseballNOW.com.
The Pirates are working to finalize a nine-year, $140 million contract with the consensus top prospect in baseball, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.
The reported extension will not only be the largest contract in team history, surpassing the eight-year, $106.75 million deal signed by Bryan Reynolds three years ago, but is also the largest guarantee for a player yet to make his MLB debut — or for a player this early into his career if finalized after Friday’s game.
If anyone is worthy of receiving that level of commitment, it’s Griffin. The 2024 ninth-overall pick soared up the system during his first professional season in 2025 and combined to hit .333/.415/.527 with 23 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs, 94 RBI and 65 stolen bases in 122 games across three levels all while winning a minor league Gold Glove as a shortstop.
