Smoke pours out of outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel as crews respond to vehicle fire

PITTSBURGH — Smoke is pouring out of the outbound side of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel.

Emergency crews were called to the tunnel at around 6:15 p.m. on Friday.

Sources tell Channel 11 the initial call was for reports of a crash, with one of the vehicles catching on fire.

Medics are treating at least two patients, sources say.

Some drivers left their vehicles and ran out of the tunnel to avoid the smoke.

PennDOT said both sides of the tunnel are closed.

Drivers are asked to use alternate routes and can expect delays.

Thick black smoke can be seen coming out of the tunnel.
