Ligonier Valley High School student dies after car slams into tree in Cook Township

COOK TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police have identified the teen who was killed early Saturday morning when his car crashed into a tree in Cook Township.

According to police, Jonathan  Kristiansen, 17,  crashed his Mitsubishi Eclipse along Route 711 near Horseshoe Bend Road around 4 a.m.

The impact of the crash split the car into two and ejected Kristiansen, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Grief counselors were made available at Ligonier Valley High School on Monday.

The principal of the school said Kristiansen was a dynamic, well-liked student.  Kristiansen was a junior at Ligonier Valley and also attended Vo-Tech school in Derry.

The coroner said speed may have been a factor in the crash. Toxicology tests are still pending.
