Westmoreland Food Bank hosting week of service to commemorate America250, 25th anniversary of 9/11

The Westmoreland Food Bank will host a countywide Week of Service from Sept. 8-11, marking both the 250th anniversary of the U.S. and the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The four-day initiative aims to address local hunger through community food drives, volunteer shifts and monetary donations.

“When this country has faced its darkest hours, it has always been the generosity and selflessness of ordinary Americans that carried us through,” Westmoreland Food Bank CEO Jennifer Miller said. “This September, we have a chance to carry on that tradition right here in Westmoreland County — by making sure no neighbor goes hungry. That is the American spirit and that is the spirit of service.”

Community members and local organizations can participate in several ways. The food bank is offering collection boxes and promotional materials for those hosting local food drives at businesses, schools and places of worship.

On-site volunteer shifts will also be available at the food bank to sort, pack and prepare food items for distribution.

The Westmoreland Food Bank maintains a network of 200 program and agency partners to serve low-income and food-insecure residents throughout Westmoreland County.

Government programs at the state and federal levels provide 50% of the food distributed by the organization. The remaining 50% is supplied through Feeding America, local donations and community food drives.
