Where are the snow plows? New system to show you online

PITTSBURGH — It's one of the questions the Channel 11 newsroom gets every time it snows – Where are the snow plows?  Soon, Pittsburgh will be able to get that answer with the click of a mouse.

Pittsburgh Public Works Director Mike Gable said you will soon be able to log onto a city website and monitor city plows and salt trucks as they make their way down each street.

A system is being tested right now, but it could go online as early as next month.

"There's been stuff mentioned in the past, saying we weren't on a certain street.  We'll have that ability now to show them we have been on those streets," said Gable.

Pittsburgh has 169 trucks equipped with the GPS units.  The monitoring fee is about $23 per truck.

"We can tell when trucks are in a building.  We know how long they have been driving or idling.  That's important to know," said Gable.
