DERRY BOROUGH, Pa. — A woman who was killed in a fire at an apartment building in Westmoreland County has been identified.
On Tuesday, Westmoreland County Coroner John A. Ackerman said Carol Banko, 58, was pronounced dead at 12:24 a.m. on Oct. 6 after she was extracted from an apartment building fire that happened on the 100 block of Gavin Way in Derry Borough.
Banko’s cause and manner of death are still pending.
Last week, neighbors described Banko as kind.
“The lady that passed away, I used to take her to church with me,” Matthew Hetrick said. “She was a nice lady. I respected her. I’m sad that this happened and I wish it didn’t.”
Derry Borough Police, the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office Detective Bureau and the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal are working to learn more details.
