Work is underway inside Monessen Middle and High School after mold was found over the summer.
“The number one thing is air quality and getting the mold out of here,” said superintendent Dr. Robert Motte.
Grades 7-12 have been learning remotely since the start of the school year and could continue to do so for some time.
Previously, Channel 11 reported that the district was exploring possible alternative locations so students could return to in-person learning, but Motte said the board voted to keep students remote.
“We want to make sure we are in a learning environment. That is safe for all people all students are kids all employees.”
The district says since the mold was physically exposed over the summer, no students were exposed to the mold.
“We completely contained it, and there was nobody here. It was summertime, so nobody was really affected,” said Motte.
The district says it’s been able to maintain its meal distributions. Students can pick up both breakfast and lunch at the elementary school.
