The ili pika was first discovered in 1983. Less than a 1000 are thought to be be alive now, living high in the mountains of northwestern China. Pikas are solitary animals that feed on grasses found only at high elevations. These pictures were taken last July-- the first time the creatures had been photographed since the 1990s. The team that finally snagged the pictures call the animal the "magic rabbit". Researchers fear they could go extinct at any time.
