Michael Wilson Sr., of Republic, was arrested after authorities said he stole the ambulance from Highlands Hospital in Connellsville and crashed it last month.
Police said Wilson went to the hospital for an undetermined reason and when he was ready to leave, he got tired of waiting for a ride, so he stole the ambulance.
"The individual didn't want to stick around or get treated and decided he was going to leave and found the means to do it and it was going to be an ambulance," said Connellsville Police Chief James Capitos.
Dash camera video showed Wilson driving erratically, side-swiping a pole and almost causing several accidents.
"I don't know if he had the siren on, but he had the lights on because traffic was getting out of his way," said Capitos.
The suspect was stopped a short time later on Route 201 in Vanderbilt, police said. Fayette County EMS Chief Richard Adobato said a GPS tracking device helped them monitor the path Wilson took.
"We were able to track his every move and relay that onto police. I'm sure he is shocked at how fast he was captured," said Adobato.
Adobato said Wilson caused about $4,000 in damages to the ambulance. No injuries were reported.
A trial date has not yet been set.
