Man struck twice by SUV after reported New Year's Day fight in Troy Hill

PITTSBURGH — A man was struck by an SUV two times on different streets in Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood on New Year’s Day, police said.

Neighbors told Channel 11 News that a fight escalated early in the morning, leading to a man being hit by the vehicle.

The 42-year-old man was struck by the SUV on Heckelman Street and again on nearby Eggers Street, where he had been helped after being hit the first time, police said. He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition.

A woman who lives in the neighborhood was awakened by commotion about 2:30 a.m. but didn’t think anything of it at first.

“It was New Year's Eve and I just thought it was a fight and not a big deal at the time,” the woman, identified only as Jill, said.

Jill called 911 after she heard gunshots.

“About five minutes later, there were three gunshots. I went to the window and the woman was screaming, ‘Oh my God. Oh my God,’ and people were running,” she said.

Police have not confirmed if the shots fired were connected to the incident involving the man being hit by the SUV.

“I was scared. I assumed they were connected because I heard one of the men say he was going to kill the person who did it,” Jill said.

Channel 11 News learned that police have identified a suspect, whose name is not being released.
