PITTSBURGH — Two employees were stabbed while in the process of firing another employee at a restaurant in Pittsburgh’s Mount Washington neighborhood, police said.

The stabbing at Bigham Tavern on Bigham Street was reported about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said the victims, manger Brad Yoder and owner Joe Rewis, were firing 40-year-old Jaymar Gilbert, of Garfield, when a physical altercation began.

One of the victims was stabbed in the abdomen and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The second victim was stabbed multiple times and was hospitalized in serious condition.

According to police paperwork, Gilbert was being fired for stealing tip money. He was confronted and returned the money, but when he tried to leave the owner and manager tried to keep him until police arrived, which is when he allegedly became violent.

“We aim to provide a safe work environment for all of our employees and for our community. It is our intent to properly manage any incidents that occur as to minimize injury and other forms of loss. Wednesday nights events were no different in process but harrowing in ending. We are wishing a quick recovery to our loved ones at this somber time," a statement on the restaurant's Facebook page said.

Gilbert was arrested. Charges are pending.
