$3.15 billion will be shifted away from local PennDOT road projects

PITTSBURGH — A shift of $3.15 billion means the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will face a challenge in the coming years when it comes to fixing local roads.

The money will be shifted from local road projects to major improvements on highways and interstates, PennDOT officials said. It’s a change that will take place over the next nine years.

Cash for regional projects will go down gradually from roughly $90 million per year, as of this past year, to $11 million per year by 2028.

PennDOT officials said there is a lack of federal funding, and federal officials can cut funding based on road status. For that reason, PennDOT officials said the shift to highways had to happen.

The change is not ideal, PennDOT officials admit, adding that it has forced them to prioritize and update maintenance plans.

“These are some of the decisions we’re gonna have to make. How do you do a Band-Aid-type of treatment rather than a full, nice paving job? So, we’re talking about them now,” PennDOT’s Cheryl Moon-Sirianni said.
