Aerial cable cars in Pittsburgh’s Strip among Port Authority projects you can weigh in on Tuesday

PITTSBURGH — From improvements to McKnight Road to aerial cable cars in the Strip District, the Port Authority of Allegheny County is looking for your input on potential infrastructure projects.

One of several public meetings will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Schenley Plaza in Oakland.

The Port Authority’s 25-year plan includes a road map of 18 projects. The transit system believes it would create a more accessible, efficient and equitable way for people to get around the Pittsburgh area.

When it comes to McKnight Road in Ross Township, a bus-only lane and improved sidewalks are on the table. And aerial cable cars could connect the Strip District to the Hill District to ease congestion.

Other ideas include adding rapid transit along the Allegheny River, creating a transit center in downtown Pittsburgh, upgrading buses to battery electric vehicles and expanding the East Busway by adding a rapid transit connection from downtown to Monroeville.

If all the projects were to become a reality, the cost could be as high as $3.7 billion.

Additional public meetings are scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. in Pittsburgh’s Market Square and one on Aug. 10 at 4:30 p.m. that will be held online.
