PITTSBURGH — The head of the Allegheny County Health Department said there was some “encouraging movement” in battling the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Daily case counts are slowly decreasing,” said ACHD director Dr. Debra Bogen. “During the first 10 days of April, we averaged around 425 new cases per day and over the past week, we are down to about 350 cases per day.”
Bogen said it’s at least a step in the right direction, as more and more people are getting vaccinated.
She encouraged college students to get their first dose sooner rather than later before they leave for the summer.
Bogen also said she is waiting for the CDC to give approval again to resume distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
“The science is sound,” she said. “Simply put, it gave people who were questioning whether they wanted a vaccine an excuse to not get one.”
She said people aged 75 and older were more than 78,000 times more likely to dive from COVID-19 than they were to get blood clots from the vaccine.
