D.C. lawmakers say $174,000 salary isn't enough

Lawmakers in Washington, D.C., get an annual salary of $174,000, but some of them say it isn't enough; they want a housing stipend, too.

He told the Hill Newspaper that on top of their salary, members of Congress should get a $2,500 monthly housing allowance because rent in Washington, D.C., is so expensive.

Members have to pay for their D.C. housing themselves, on top of their rent or mortgage back home.

Members of Congress haven't given themselves a raise since 2009.

The bill that funds members personal budgets passed out of subcommittee Friday, keeping salaries frozen at those 2009 levels.
