Duquesne Light employee hospitalized after explosion in manhole

PITTSBURGH — An explosion in a manhole in a Pittsburgh neighborhood injured a Duquesne Light employee who was working there.

The incident happened around 10:45 a.m. at the Duquesne Light Woods Run Building in the 2800 block of New Beaver Avenue.

Officials with Duquesne Light said an employee was working in the underground manhole when a cable failed.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said medics found the man alert and conscious when he was transported to the hospital in stable condition with burn injuries to the face. He was not identified.

Duquesne Light issued a statement regarding this incident:

“The safety of our employees and customers is always our top priority and our thoughts go out to this employee, his family and his colleagues. An investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway. At this time there is no evidence of live electrical contact. This was an isolated issue— no one else was injured and no customers are out of power.”
